Half Day Trip to Venice Islands | WEEKENDinITALY
Experience the islands around Venice by private boat!
As your boat leaves the Piazzetta San Marco, your guide will take you across the Bacino di San Marco and pass the imposing silhouette of San Giorgio Maggiore. Circling Venice's main group of islands, your boat will take you past the Lido and San Lazzaro degli Armeni on the southside and east, and the cemetery island of San Michele on the north side, before reaching Murano, Burano, and Torcello.
Murano has been home to the glass makers' furnaces since 1291 since the Serenissima republic moved them to the island to prevent the too frequent fires from wreaking damage in the city center. Murano reached its maximum splendor during the 16th century, when the urban structure of the island was increased and enriched by palaces, churches, and gardens. Your tour includes the visit to a furnace to learn about the art and secret of the glassblowers and glass sculptors.
After the short stop, your tour will proceed to Burano, passing the island of San Francesco nel Deserto. The monastery Saint Francis, founded in the 14th century, is still a working Franciscan monastery today. On Burano, take a walk through the streets and squares of this special fishing island, characterized by vividly colored houses and famous for the art of lace making.
Your boat then takes you to Torcello, the first settlement of the lagoon of Venice. The basis of the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta dates back to 639. The beautiful mosaics represent Maria with the Jesus child in the cupola above the altar, and the Last Judgement on the back wall. The church of Santa Fosca, a romanic building closed by a portico, faces onto the Piazza d'Erba. Here you will find the so-called Attila's Throne, famous stone seat, perfect for taking pictures.
